Earthquake Today in Indonesia: 6.5 Quake Hits Near Sulawesi

JAKARTA: An earthquake of 6.5 magnitude struck off Indonesia’s Sulawesi island on Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said (USGS), but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

The temblor was felt in Manado, the capital Indonesia’s North Sulawesi Province, with the national disaster agency saying residents poured into the streets in panic. The quake had no potential to trigger a tsunami, said Subagyo, an official at Indonesia’s meteorological and geophysics agency who like many Indonesians uses one name.

Indonesia, the world’s largest archipelago, is prone to earthquakes due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin. In 2004, a massive earthquake off Sumatra island triggered a tsunami that killed 230,000 people in a dozen countries. Most of the deaths were in northern Sumatra’s Aceh province.
