Five scenes from Welcome that still make you crack up

Welcome (2007) was universally panned by critics as a mind-numbing comedy but it was declared a blockbuster and went on to become the second highest grossing film of the year. With an ensemble cast of Akshay Kumar, Anil Kapoor, Nana Patekar, Katrina Kaif, Paresh Rawal, Mallika Sherawat and Feroz Khan it later turned out to be a film with a high repeat value. People just didn’t change the channel whenever it was aired on television.

Now that its sequel Welcome Back is ready to hit the theatres on September 4, here’s a look at the scenes which made Welcome a hilarious experience:

Steering in the hand: Dr Ghungroo (Paresh Rawal) and his family are being chased by Shetty Bhai’s goons and Rajiv (Akshay Kumar) is driving the car. Rajiv realises something is wrong with the steering wheel and the next moment it’s in his hands uprooted from the dashboard. This entire scene is spontaneous and high on energy. You cannot but smile everytime it plays on TV.

Aaloo le lo, kaanda le lo: Vijay Raaz plays a filmmaker in disguise who lures Uday Shetty (Nana Patekar) into believing that he can be an actor. On the first day of shooting, Shetty Bhai is made to sell vegetables on the street and that too in a suit. Nana Patekar’s ‘intense’ comedy makes it a fantastic scene.

Lo choo diya: Majnu Bhai (Anil Kapoor) calls Rajiv to his mansion and asks him to marry Shetty Bhai’s sister Sanjana (Katrina Kaif). Rajiv refuses and enters into a fight with Majnu. As Majnu warns Rajiv to not touch him, he touches Majnu not once but several times. This instils a fear in Majnu that somebody powerful has Rajiv’s back. The way Majnu says “Humse bada toh sirf George Bush hi hai,” will crack you up.

Painting of animals: Rajiv uses Ishika (Mallika Sherawat) to fool Majnu and she strikes a friendship with Majnu. One day, Majnu shows her a painting which is as stupid as his thought process. This scene reveals that Majnu Bhai’s real name is Sagar Pandey.

Abhi hum zinda hain: Welcome was Feroz Khan’s last performance. He played the gangster RDX whose catchphrase ‘Abhi hum zinda hain,’ became an instant hit with the audience.
