Govt climbs down on porn sites ban, says can’t do moral policing

Centre on Monday told the Supreme Court that it can not ban porn except for child pornography.

The government said this during the resumption of hearing in the apex court on a petition seeking a ban on pornographic websites.

The Centre said that the government can’t do moral policing and become a totalitarian state. Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi said that two people watching something in their bedroom can not be penalised.

Earlier this month, internet service providers (ISPs) in the country were asked by the government to block more than 800 pornographic websites. But following criticism of its action on social media and other forum, it issued a second order to ISPs to only block only websites hosting child pornography.

The ISPs, however, refused to implement the order for unblocking sites without child pornography unless they are given a specific list.
