Happy Hours: Pune’s Nightlife has multiple options!!

From muddled cocktails to absinthe shots, from rooftop lounges to underground nightclubs, Pune’s nightlife is pulsating with multiple options. Simply Pune goes club hopping around the city.

Cocktails and Conversations

This is the go-to place after a long day at work. Located on the 14th floor, the view from Evviva Sky Lounge urges you to enjoy the city lights that stretch all around you. A soothing calm descends upon the place as the sun goes down. The decor is simple yet chic. The sleek, up-lit circular bar in the centre of the lounge is quite an attraction. Apart from the usual classics, the bar here offers an interesting range of fresh fruit cocktails and shooters. Order a drink, sit under the starry sky and unwind. We particularly liked the Sky Breeze, a citrus vodka and the Rob Roy, with whiskey, sweet vermouth and maraschino cherries stirred together. If you’re in a large group then call for a pitcher of the Blueberry Spritzer. Pair it with their delectable kebabs, or else savour the Lobster Tail or Fried Calamari. There’s no dance floor here, but the music does turn upbeat as the evening grows. If you are looking for a night of dancing, then this isn’t the place to be, but if it’s a quiet soiree that’s on your mind, Evviva is a charming option.

In High Spirits

When this nightspot opened, Ouzos, the anise-flavoured Greek aperitif, didn’t tickled Pune’s palette in a big way. The club has however brought with itself an interesting spread of this cocktails, infused with Ouzus. This 3,000 square feet lounge has a few private enclosures, a bar counter and a common lounge that doubles up as a dance floor. While the decor isn’t elaborate, the bar menu sure is with special highlights on their range of shooters. On offer are a wide range of spirits from the world over including absinthe, sambuca, ouzos, Amaretto and Midori Melon. If you’re here, make sure you try the Post 91 (rum, sambuca and tequila), the Flaming Lamborghini (sambucabased) and Earthquake (Peach Schnapps and absinthe).

The club has their own restaurant Post 91 in the same building, so there’s a fairly decent variety in the food served here. Call for a drink and pair it with their sumtous finger food. You could try the bruschetta, nachos, crostini or calamari. With New Year’s eve plans in the pipeline, Ouzos can be a good option to party at.

Hip Haunt

Few places can beat the charm of a rooftop bar especially when it glances over the tony neighbourhood of Koregaon Park. The biggest USP of Minus, city’s favourite hangout joint is its location on top of O Hotel. It’s a weekend-only place, so if you want to kickstart early, head there on a Friday evening for the Weekend Sundowners. Popular city-based DJs get the evening grooving with their foot thumping music. Minus shares space with Addah, a rooftop restaurant with a lovely swimming pool.

The decor here is all about comfort. So sink into a comfy couch, perch on the high stools at the bar counter or take one of the fun, colourful cushioned seats. The place looks beautiful at dusk and comes alive with beautiful lighting. Minus makes for the perfect date place or a quiet evening of cocktails and conversations with friends. The place scores the highest on its location and the setting.

FISH BOWl                                                                                                                                                                          Sound Trust

You can drink like a fish here because Fish bowl offers an exotic and innovative range of cocktails on offer. The lounge gets its name from the signature cocktails, which are made with rum or vodka stirred with fresh fruit juice and a dash of spice, served in miniature glass fishbowls. The decor is done up tastefully in tones of cream, brown and orange. The highlight, undoubtedly, is the 12 foot-long flaming yellow-orange Onyx bar carved out of a single stone, which attractively stands in the centre facing a wall lit up with candles. The music here is peppy and up-beat with a heavy dose of EDM, House and Retro. Go for the DJ Nights if you want to dance the night away. With winters in full swing, we suggest you sit in their outdoor section. Pair your drinks with the Chappali Kebab or Cajun marinated crispy fried kalamari.

Dance Therapy

It took the city by storm when it threw open its door to party-goers two years ago and still continues to be a popular nightspot for the city’s party lovers. The decor brings a slice of Cuba to Pune with a wall of Latino pop art depicting the high life of Havana, high ceilings and suspended crush glass cubical lights with changing hues and a throbbing dance floor. They’ve kept the crowds flowing in with innovative offerings. So, on Stiletto Senora Wednesdays, the girls get free unlimited shots all night long. Fashion Fridays see the soiree set turn up in the trend of the day to win the top prize while Superpacked Saturdays are all about DJs spinning the most foot tapping commercial music. The signature cocktails are a must-have especially the Cokello, La paz and Kuebano. We recommend the Caprese pita pocket, beer drunken prawns and the hung curd chicken drumstick. If you’re spending a long evening here then don’t miss the world of chocolate cigars-a delicious combination of orange cointreau and Baileys. The inside section is where the action is but if you want a breath of fresh air, head to the welcoming al fresco section with high tables, lounge seating and pretty lanterns.

Uber Chic

Out for a night of upscale revelry with flambeed absinthe shots, private couch corners and a cosy dance floor? Walk past the lively lobby of J W Marriott and take the special elevator dotted with tiny lights to this charming discotheque-lounge that is tucked away in the basement. It’s sprawling, with an imposing island bar and distinct sections that give you the option of choosing your experience-a rough underground wasted garage, deliberately dark with open pipes running across the roof with a rusted finish; a bed lounge section and a distinct dance floor, an island bar and a separate shots bar. The bar, expectedly, is well stocked with vodkas, gins, whiskeys and wines from the world over. But when you’re here, let the expert bartenders take over. Don’t miss the Mi A Mi specials Mi A Mi on Fire and Sex in Miami City. If you can stomach absinthe, then go for the Absinthe Minded. With mid week Ladies Nights, Super Saturdays and some of the best DJs in town, Mi A Mi is a high-energy nightclub where Puneites likes to party.

Hyper Casual

Warm, happy and fun-that’s how you’d describe Jimmy Hu, a new Asian bar that serves street-style food. The decor here is vibrant and quirky-in true Asian style-with retro Lambretta scooters and frangipani trees. There’s ample space, which is neatly divided into three distinct sections. We liked the patio that’s prettily done up with a vintage roof ceiling of tatami mats and is lit up with floor lamps and candle lights on the table. The inside section is done up with bright shiny barrels that have Chinese inscriptions meaning joy, fun, bar, beers or style and the Asian theme carries into the open, elegant garden. The highlight at Jimmy Hu is the innovative range of cocktails made with fresh herbs and fruits. Don’t taste the Triple Sec or any flavoured liqueurs or syrups here, instead try their signature drinks such as Balinese Bomber, Jimmy Jump or Pat Pong. Ask for the signature Scorpion Bowl, a large portion of any cocktail. If you enjoy Retro music, then visit here on Friday evenings or swing to Commercial music beats on Saturday nights.

Theme Play

Party regulars swear by it and claim it is the best thing to have happened to Pune’s nightlife. The rooftop location that offers stunning views of the city and its casual upbeat air make Penthouze a top-of-the-charts party spot. The emphasis here is on the music, so the decor is kept minimal and bathed in white. The music is a mix of EDM, Techno and Big room sound. What makes Penthouze fun is that there’s never a dull moment here. Enjoy the various themed nights such as Latin Salsa, Pop Champagne, Big Room Sound, Bollywood Nights, Full Moon parties and more. The bartenders whip up an impressive collection of martinis, shooters, vodka and tequila cocktails. We particulatly like the Paralyzer-vodka, tequila and kahlua mixed in cola. If you want a glass of molecular gastronomy, try the Molecul-R. Don’t miss the shooters, especially Jager Bomb and Brain Haemorrhage, which has Schnappes, Baileys and a dash of Grenadine. There aren’t too many options for the hungry soul but go for Chicken Sufiani, Dum Ka Murg or Mushroom Peri Peri to nibble on.
