Cosmetic acupuncture, an ancient form of Chinese medicine has been widely used in the East for more than two millennia, and is becoming increasingly popular in the West as an alternative to invasive medical treatments. Celebrities are not the only ones with an interest in acupuncture; many respected scientific organizations have studied acupuncture and have found it to be effective in preventing and treating a number of ailments.
Acupuncture offers the possibility of taking years off one’s face and other parts of the body
Celebrities are known for having access to the best services available, and many A-list actors, musicians, and superstar athletes claim that their secret health and beauty tip is receiving acupuncture regularly.
So what are celebrities using acupuncture for? Stars have reportedly been using acupuncture for a variety of conditions, as well as a preventative measure to maintain good health. Some celebs swear that their great looks are the result of acupuncture treatments, while others prefer to use acupuncture as a way to improve the inner workings of their bodies.
Acupuncture Face Lift
It’s a well-known fact that youth and beauty are valuable commodities in Hollywood, especially for women. A number of high profile celebrities are turning to acupuncture “face-lifts” in order to maintain a youthful appearance, while also reducing the formation of the fine lines and wrinkles that come with ageing. Famous fans of this procedure include Madonna, Cher and Gwyneth Paltrow. These ladies reportedly visit their acupuncturists once a week for the procedure, which involves the insertion of super-fine needles into areas of the face that tend to form wrinkles, such as frown lines and crow’s feet around the eyes.
The rich and famous care just as much about their bodies as they do their faces. Being in perfect shape is important in Hollywood, and the city’s residents are experts in all types of diet plans. Acupuncture has become a popular method for losing weight. Jennifer Lopez accredited a 15 pound weight-loss to an alternative medicine regime which included acupuncture, and Jessica Simpson has also received acupuncture in the past to assist her in reaching her weight loss goals. Many Eastern medicine weight loss programs combine acupuncture with the use of various herbs and teas for best results.
Back home in India, acupuncture is gaining respect and popularity for treating a wide variety of diseases with great success.
Dr. Raman Kapur, who is a pioneer of Medical Acupuncture in India, has been practicing this science for over 32 years and swears by it. He is the Chairman, Dept. of Medical Acupuncture at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. He is also the recipient of the first “Padma Shri” in Medical Acupuncture by Hon’ble President of India Smt. Pratibha Patil in 2008 for pioneering research work in acupuncture done by him. He also uses acupuncture for cosmetic face lift, weight loss, wellness and sports injuries.
Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. In modern times, the adage could well change to beauty lies in the hands of a skilled cosmetic surgeon. The pain and perils of cosmetic surgery are well-known but the quest for lasting youth and beauty has meant that more people than ever are willing to go under the knife. But what if all this is possible after just a few painless pin-pricks? Acupuncture offers the possibility of taking years off one’s face and other parts of the body.
Lacotse Catherine, a 49-year old French lady living in India, decided to try acupuncture for her sagging facial skin and crow’s feet and is happy with the results. She says with a broad smile, “I took about 10-12 sessions and at the end of it even my husband commented on the change in my face.” She chuckles and adds, “Husbands are brutally honest about their wives’ appearance.” Dr. Raman Kapur, who first trained as an M.B.B.S. doctor and then went on to study acupuncture – is treating Catherine for cosmetic acupuncture.
Acupuncture needles stimulate collagen (protein) synthesis, which is how wrinkles on face get smoothened out. The needles also increase blood supply to facial tissues and that is how the skin starts looking radiant and blemish free. Acupuncture can only do a seven millimeter pull of the skin around a wrinkle. If it requires more than that to be straightened, then the wrinkle cannot be removed. That is why those who practice acupuncture do not call it a face-lift, the term otherwise popularly used by cosmetic surgeons.
But even if the procedure is not called by that term, acupuncture can and does offer remedies for many cosmetic problems like sagging facial skin, double chin, sagging breasts, breast augmentation, bags under the eyes, upper and lower medial eye areas, reducing male breasts, forehead wrinkles, cheeks, upper and lower epigastria area (middle of the stomach), obesity, sagging upper arm, acupuncture version of a tummy tuck, obesity and cellulite.
Dr. Kapur, who has an almost evangelical zeal about acupuncture says that the acupuncture needles stimulates collagen (protein) synthesis, which is how the wrinkles get smoothened out. The needles also increase blood supply to facial tissues and that’s how the skin starts looking radiant and blemish free.
But for the effect to be permanent Kapur, who runs a clinic with his wife Sunita says the organ or organs responsible for the same also needs to be treated. Says Kapur, “If your internal organs work well, then your face will show it.” Sunita points out that, for instance, if the spleen channel (not to be confused with the organ) is deficient, then the body will be prone to loose skin, cellulite and varicose veins. With ageing, when the energy flow of the channels reduces, wrinkles start appearing and the skin starts sagging.
Cosmetic acupuncture has caught the attention of more of the wrinkled public. Its holistic approach appeals in particular to women who want to slow signs of aging but do not want to undergo surgery or to inject chemicals.
As an interesting adage, Kapur tells me that he gets his maximum patients for cosmetic acupuncture from Pakistan. The governments of both the countries seems to have missed out on this as an important tool for its ongoing Track II diplomacy measures. After all which heartless country will refuse painless, forever beauty for its citizens?
His wife Dr. Sunita Kapur, is a total convert to Acupuncture practice from Western Medicine. She is a Senior Consultant, Dept. of Medical Acupuncture, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital New Delhi. She does specialized work in cosmetology and also in treating various gynae disorders like dysmenorrhea, irregular menses, Premenopausal syndrome and infertility with Acupuncture.
The commonest ailments for which Dr’s Raman and Sunita Kapur use acupuncture are low back pain, neck-shoulder pain, migraine, acidity, irritable bowel syndrome, stress, insomnia, knee arthritis, to name a few. Their patient testimonials can be seen on Youtube at Kapuracu.com, where over a 100 patients share their experiences of having got cured from various diseases.
They also run a highly acclaimed and successful training programme for medical doctors on Acupuncture, as it is their dream to make acupuncture popular all over the country.
