Mamata Banerjee is expected to press for more funds to ask PM

In her proposed meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 11, chief minister Mamata Banerjee is expected to press for more funds for Bengal. Whether the Centre gives in to her demand as a quid pro quo for her party’s support for the GST Bill is yet to be seen, Mamata’s itinerary will include a meeting with President Pranab Mukherjee and JD(U) leaders.

Mamata’s meeting with the PM comes in the wake of Centre clearing the phase-II of the National Cyclone Risk Mitigation Project in which a Rs 2361.35 crore World Bank assistance will be shared among 6 states, including Bengal. The project envisages cyclone forecasting, warning systems, cyclone risk mitigation and capacity building in multi-hazard rrisk management.

Mamata, said a source, will also ask the PM for interim assistance under the National Calamity Relief Fund. “Bengal hasn’t received any assistance,” an MP said.

Sources said Mamata is also likely to raise the demand for Rs 4,500 crore, which the Centre has held back in the Backward Region Grant Funds. “Of the Rs 7,500 crore allocated, the state has got Rs 3,000 crore,” the MP said.
