Mayawati Inducts Former Congress MP From Karnal, Declares Him Chief Minsterial Candidate For Haryana

As if inducting political heavy weight Mr Birender Singh, in BJP was not enough to put a more hurdles in front of ruling Congress and its two-terms Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda in Haryana, Bahujan Samaj Party today not only inducted former Karnal Congress MP Arvind Sharma, but also declared him to be party’s chief ministerial candidate in the State. Party supremo Ms. Mayawati announced the development during a press conference in New Delhi on Sunday.

“If our party wins in the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections, then Arvind Sharma will be our chief ministerial candidate. We will follow the same policy ofbahujan hitai, bahujan sukhai’ as we did in Uttar Pradesh,’’ she announced.

Clearing her plans to contest Haryana Assembly elections on its own, Ms. Mayawati said if her party comes to power in the State, it will look after the interests of all sections of the society including of people from the weaker sections, religious minorities and also upper castes.

She revealed that Mr. Sharma had been in touch with her party for several months and understands its ideology and functioning. Ms. Mayawati alleged that the ruling party in the State was catering to the interests of one community. The poor, Dalits and others sections were being discriminated against, she charged.

Mr. Sharma, on this occassion, said he was feeling “suffocated’’ in the Congress in Haryana. He alleged that the party was not addressing to the needs of the poor, farmers and Dalits and claimed he had raised this in the party forum to no avail. Mr. Sharma won the Lok Sabha election from Sonepat in 1996 as an Independent. He joined the Congress in 1999 and represented Karnal in the Lok Sabha in 2004 and again in 2009. He lost to BJP’s Ashwini Kumar Chopra in the 2014 general elections.
