Mobile internet services banned across Gujarat

AHMEDABAD: Gujarat government has suspended mobile internet services across the state on Saturday following detention of Hardik Patel.

“We have decided to ban mobile internet service in the state to tackle the law and order situation and to curb the rumours across Gujarat for an indefinite period,”

Gujarat police has detained Patel quota stir leader Hardik Patel along with 35 of his supporters from Varachha area of Surat on Saturday morning for trying to take out the ‘Ekta Yatra’ without taking prior permission from authorities.

Mobile internet services have been banned from Saturday afternoon to 12pm on September 20, according to a notification issued by Ahmedabad city police commissioner Shivanand Jha.

The Gujarat high court had on Tuesday upheld the state government’s decision to impose a week-long mobile internet ban last month when riots broke out on August 25 following the arrest of Hardik Patel, the leader of the Patidar reservation stir.

Gujarat had witnessed violence after Hardik’s detention on August 25, in which ten people were killed in the state and property of crores was damaged as well.
